We’ve talked you into it! You’ve decided to start a newsletter, or keep one going. Great move. Newsletters are one of our Fab Four of communications for a reason. They’re a powerful, direct way to stay in touch with clients, prospects and partners.

But let’s be honest. It’s easy for a newsletter to slip to the bottom of your to-do list. Even when you have plenty to say, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s why this article tackles two key questions:

  • What to say in a newsletter
  • How to make it happen regularly

What to say: 7 easy ideas

Don’t overthink it – newsletters don’t need to be over-long or super clever. They just have to show up consistently and offer your audience something of value or interest. Here are seven newsletter content ideas that work for financial services businesses of any size:

1. Blog highlights
Provide the opening paragraph of your most recent blog post and link to it. This keeps your blog content working harder and steers more traffic to your website. Win/win.

You might have noticed that at 64 Media, we do this all the time.

2. FAQs
Use your newsletter to answer common questions. Think about the things you are asked all the time – and answer one of these things clearly and helpfully in each edition.

Tip! You could use this FAQ content to build an FAQ page for your website over time.

3. Curated content
Share a link to a short roundup of relevant articles, news or research, with a quick comment on why you’re sharing.

This positions you as someone who stays informed and adds value by filtering what matters.

4. Media mentions
Been quoted in the press or featured in a publication? Provide a quick summary of what you said and why it matters and provide links to the stories.

Media mentions are third party endorsements which help build your reputation as a thought leader.

5. Personal notes
A quick ‘from the desk of’ intro or a reflection on something topical adds warmth and relatability.

This reminds your audience there’s a real person behind the brand.

6. In case you missed it
Recap a few older posts or key insights you’ve previously shared.

Not everyone reads everything the first time.

7. A simple checklist or tip sheet
A short list of tips, a seasonal checklist or even a one-question self-audit can add instant value – and is easy to read.

For example: “Is your super balance still appropriate for your stage of life?”

And here’s 7 ways to make it a habit

Once you have a few ideas, the next challenge is sending your newsletter regularly. That doesn’t have to mean weekly (although you may have noticed, we do). Monthly or quarterly might be fine for you. Once you have decided on frequency though, make sure you stick to it!

Here’s how to stay on track:

1. Build a content calendar
Plan out a rough theme or topic for each edition in advance. You’ll feel more organised and you’ll never be stuck wondering what to write about at the last minute.

2. Repurpose your Fab Four
Don’t reinvent the wheel. Pull newsletter content from your blogs, social posts, media mentions and FAQs. This isn’t cutting corners – it’s making your content work harder.

3. Build a content bank
Keep a stash of evergreen ideas like tips, insights or case studies. It makes writing easier when you’re busy and helps you stay consistent.

4. Share the load
If you’re in a team, rotate who contributes. One person can write the intro, another can provide an insight or case story. It doesn’t all need to come from one voice.

5. Use scheduling tools
Platforms like Mailchimp allow you to schedule your newsletter ahead of time. You can create it when you have the headspace, then set it to send automatically.

6. Keep it manageable
You don’t need multiple articles per issue. Even one strong insight and a few useful links are enough. Again, you might have noticed that’s what we do at 64 Media. Aim for helpful and consistent, rather than complex and occasional.

7. Proof – then press send
Make sure everything reads clearly and correctly. A quick proofread catches the small things that can undermine your credibility. And if you’re in a regulated sector, be doubly sure the content stays within your boundaries – no accidental advice, no out-of-scope commentary, no privacy issues. When in doubt, check!
