Summer is officially over, even if the barometer thinks otherwise, and we truly are into the business part of the year. As beach holidays fade into the background, we’ve taken a quick look at who’s who in the financial services media landscape in 2023.
ISS Market Intelligence

Jamie Williamson, editor of Financial Standard, has been promoted to Managing Editor of the title. Jamie was first appointed to the team in 2016 and in a former life worked for 64 Media! Announcing the promotion today, 1 March 2023, Michelle Baltazar, ISS Market Intelligence (ISS MI)’s Executive Director of Media in Australia said, “Financial Standard is going from strength to strength due to Jamie’s leadership and strong news acumen. I’m certain that she will continue to kick goals and reach new milestones as managing editor.”
ISS Market Intelligence (ISS MI) now publishes Financial Standard, and its affiliated titles, as well as Industry Moves, and Money magazine which were previously published by Rainmaker Information. Michelle Baltazar, who started with Rainmaker in November 2005, is ISS MI Executive Director of Media in Australia. She has also been Editor-in-Chief of Money since 2019. Karren Vergara has been senior journalist with the title since 2017. The team also includes journalists Chloe Walker, Cassandra Baldini and Andrew McKean. Chloe was appointed in October, 2021, while Cassandra and Andrew joined the team in March and April 2022, respectively. Eliot Hastie became senior journalist of Money in January this year, working alongside Tom Watson who was appointed senior journalist in March 2022. Sharyn McCowen has been digital editor of Money’s bi-weekly newsletters since 2019. ISS MI is currently recruiting for a Managing Editor for Money. Rachel Alembakis joined the team in 2019 and is Managing Editor of ISS MI’s FS Sustainability (formerly The Sustainability Report) and Audacious Investing. She also writes for Financial Standard. Elizabeth Fry has been Managing Editor of Industry Moves since 2021. Michael Lynch has been multimedia manager since December 2021, producing the Financial Standard News, The Greener Way and Friends with Money podcasts.
Financial Standard will host the first of four Technical Services Forums on 15 March from 8:30am-9:30pm at The Fullerton Hotel in Sydney.

Australian Financial Review
Aleks Vickovich began working at the Australian Financial Review (AFR) in 2019 and recently covered the Quality of Advice Review Final Report recommendations and the Treasurer’s vision for superannuation, to name but two. Lucy Dean has been wealth and personal finance reporter since February 2022, writing about wealth management, personal finance, lifestyle, and leisure. Former Financial Standard journalist, Kanika Sood, writes for the AFR’s Street Talk column, having joined the publication in 2021. Former Super Review editor and Money Management journalist, Hannah Wootton has been a reporter for the AFR since 2019, and is now reporting on superannuation and national news.
Benchmark Media
Benchmark Media publishes selfmanagedsuper, for self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) practitioners, and smstrusteenews for SMSF trustees. Publisher and founder Darin Tyson-Chan and senior journalist, Jason Spits, both write for the titles and Taras Misko is sub-editor. Selfmanagedsuper is hosting its SMSF Professionals Day in Brisbane on 25 May, Melbourne on 1 June and Sydney on 8 June.

Conexus Financial
In September 2022, Simon Hoyle, who had previously been with the group for more than 10 years, returned to Conexus Financial after four years with CoreData, where he had been head of market insight. Simon is now Conexus Financial group publisher. Julia Newbould has been managing editor since February 2022. In July, Chris Dastoor was promoted to editor of Conexus Financial’s Professional Planner publication, where he was previously senior journalist. The appointment followed the departure of Tahn Sharpe who had been with the group for almost five years. Tahn is now managing editor with The Inside Network. Callum Jones was appointed to the role of journalist at Professional Planner in October. Sharon Klyne, who has a long career in finance communications, was appointed editor of Conexus Financial’s Investment Magazine in June last year, after four years as Associate Director, Institutional Communications with ANZ Bank.
As part of its Political Series, Conexus Financial is hosting the Quality of Advice Review: A roadmap to the future with The Hon. Stephen Jones, MP. The breakfast events will be held in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne on 13, 14 and 16 March, respectively.

Financial Newswire
Launched by former Money Management managing editor, Mike Taylor, Financial Newswire will celebrate its second birthday in May, at its 2023 Platforms, Wraps and Advice Technology Conference in the Hunter Valley. Wealth editor, Oksana Patron, writes for the title, as does journalist Yasmine Masi, who is also editor of SE Asia Newsletter.
Momentum Media
In September 2022, Money Management and Super Review, along with their associated assets, including events and websites, were sold to Momentum Media which also publishes financial services titles ifa, Investor Daily, Adviser Innovation and SMSF Adviser. Maja Garaca Djurdjevic first joined Momentum in November 2018 and in 2021 was appointed editor of its wealth portfolio, including ifa, Investor Daily and Adviser Innovation. Laura Dew, who joined Money Management as a senior reporter in 2019, was appointed editor of Money Management, Super Review and SMSF Adviser in 2022. Charbel Kadib has been with the group since October 2017, and in December 2022 was appointed senior journalist, financial services, writing across ifa, InvestorDaily, Money Management, and Super Review. Journalist Keith Ford is also writing for ifa and Investor Daily. Keith has been with Momentum Media since September 2016, previously working in production and as a content creator. Journalist, Jon Bragg, also writes for both titles, while Rhea Nath, who joined the team in November 2022, writes for Money Management and Super Review. Momentum Media launched an internship program last year, which saw Jessica Penny and Jasmine Siljic working as cadet journalists from August 2022 across the group’s publications, including those in the financial services portfolio.
Investor Daily is hosting ESG Summit 2023 in Sydney on 23 March and Melbourne on 29 March.

Riskinfo
Riskinfo and RiskinfoNZ, are published by Peter Sobels, who also writes for the publications. Annie Gray is Riskinfo’s New Zealand-based journalist working across both the Australian and New Zealand titles. Annie has extensive business journalism experience in newspapers, magazines and online. Senior journalist, Steve Hart, reports on life insurance industry news for RiskinfoNZ and Riskinfo. Originally from the UK, where he worked as a news reporter and editor, Steve moved to New Zealand in 2000 to join The New Zealand Herald business desk. In 2022, he relocated to Melbourne. Steve has also worked in broadcast news and podcast production.

This year, Riskinfo will host Riskinfocus 23, a national risk advice CPD Tour for financial advisers, visiting Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne from March 14-29.
